4 Ways to Improve Your Home’s Airflow in Knoxville, TN

The end of winter is approaching here in Knoxville, TN, but those chilly nights and brisk mornings still have you cranking up the heater. Is all that warm air making the whole house nice and cozy, or are you experiencing some uncomfortable cold spots here and there? Here are four ways that you can improve the airflow in your home and balance out those temperatures.

1. Clean Filters, Vents and Ducts

Keeping your HVAC system components clean is a good place to start improving airflow in your home. Clean or replace your HVAC filter about every three months.

Your wall vents and air ducts accumulate dust and debris at a much slower pace, so just clean them as needed. But duct repair and maintenance is not a DIY project, so contact us for help.

2. Use Fans to Circulate Air

Ceiling fans and oscillating fans can help move the air around inside larger rooms, eliminating hot and cold spots to balance the air temperatures. Ceiling fans should spin clockwise in the winter and counterclockwise in the summer to circulate the air more efficiently.

3. Schedule an HVAC Maintenance Checkup

Many heaters and air conditioners lose efficiency over the years due to air leaks in the ductwork, wear and tear on moving parts or even vibrations causing screws to loosen up. A routine checkup of your HVAC system every year can catch a lot of these issues before they do real damage. By tuning up your system, your airflow will likely improve.

4. Upgrade Your HVAC System

If your home continues to have a lot of cold areas and hot spots, or you find that the air in some parts of the house just seems stale, you might need to modify your HVAC system. This is more common in larger, multi-floor homes.

Installing extra return ducts will get fresh air to every inch of your home and will do it much more efficiently. Having separate thermostats or zoned controls for upstairs and downstairs can also help balance air temperatures. You may need to set the downstairs a couple of degrees lower in the winter to compensate for warm air escaping to the upper floor.

If the airflow in your home needs balancing or your HVAC system hasn’t been professionally serviced in years, contact Cook’s Comfort Systems, Inc. today to set up a maintenance checkup. We’ll figure out some solutions to make your home more comfortable.
