Should My Heat Pump Run Non-Stop in Knoxville, TN?

Whether it has been one month or 10 years since you purchased your heat pump in Knoxville, TN, one thing the system should never do is run non-stop. Assuming that you own a single-speed unit, it should cool your home in a cycle lasting about 10 to 15 minutes. Cycles lasting much more than 15 minutes can signify one or more of the following issues with your heat pump.

A Hindrance to Heat Transfer

Heat pumps cool a home by removing heat from it and blowing it outside, and they do this by way of refrigerant and two sets of coils. The coils, though, can get dirty and fail to remove the heat, in which case the system will run circulate warm air.

To keep the coil in your air handler clean, make sure to replace the air filter in the return vent every 90 days. A professional can clean the coil in your compressor, but you can at least clear out any debris surrounding the unit, such as fallen leaves.

Low Refrigerant Levels

Without refrigerant, the coils can’t do their job. Unfortunately, refrigerant lines do corrode over time and can leak out this chemical, making cooling impossible and forcing the heat pump to cycle non-stop. Leave the repair to a professional because you’ll harm your health if you are exposed to refrigerant.

An Undersized Heat Pump

If you recently purchased your heat pump, then chances are that it’s running constantly because of its small size. Whoever installed it may have miscalculated, or not considered, your home’s size. The only way you can address this is to install a larger heat pump.
